Recently the idea of yoni steaming has been picking up more press since holistic health is becoming more main stream. Though I am always weary about mainstream practices, yoni steaming has proved itself to be beneficial to women and their wombs for centuries.


Yoni is a sanskrit word meaning sacred space. Therefore whenever you hear the word yoni, it is referring to the women's reproductive system, including her vagina and womb.


Yoni steaming is an ancient practice. A combination of herbs are usually steeped in a pot of hot water to form a potent and nutritious "tea". However, instead of drinking this tea, the women squat over it, covered with a blanket, allowing the steam from the tea to rise up into her sacred area or "yoni".


The steam that comes from the herbs is very medicinal to the women's reproductive system. Even though many different herbs have different areas of healing, a general yoni steam will be geared toward healing the following:

For preventative purposes, yoni steams should be done about every 6 months. If you are trying to heal from any ailment then every month will help. You can do a yoni steam to cleanse your body after having intercourse with a new partner or a traumatic experience. Centuries ago when yoni steams were first practiced they were a spiritual practice. While you're squatting over the pot, do some deep breathes, meditate on the health of your womb or anything you want to manifest in your life.


Do not do a yoni steam while you are pregnant, actively menstruating or have an IUD implant.




How to do a Yoni Steam?

The amount of herbs used can vary depending on the purpose of the steam. A general yoni steam only needs about 3 tablespoons -1/2 cup of herbs. You can steep them in a large pot, but only fill the pot half way so the water and extreme heat does not burn the yoni. Use the cleanest water you have access to. Using bottled or filtered water is best.


  • Boil water in large pot

  • Add herbs to pot, cover and let steep for 5 -10 minutes

  • Place pot on the floor, in yoni steaming chair or in the toilet under the lid for easy access

  • Cover your legs with a blanket, sheet or towel to trap the steam

  • Squat or sit over the pot, allowing the steam to rise up into the yoni

  • Sit there for at least 10 minutes

  • Meditate, think happy thoughts, deep breathes and allow the healing herbs to rise up into your sacred space


It is important to find a position that is comfortable for you. Not many people can hold a squat for 10 minutes, but it is something to work up to. You can also kneel over the pot if that is more comfortable.
